
As April brings us both Stress Awareness Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we at Greenpoint Psychotherapy find ourselves reflecting on the profound intersection of these two observances, and what they mean for our practice and for you, our valued clients and community members.
The Reality of Stress and Trauma in Today’s World
Let’s be honest: we’re living through particularly challenging times. The political climate continues to be divisive and anxiety-producing for many. Following the recent presidential transition, many in our communities feel uncertain about what the future holds for issues close to their hearts, including bodily autonomy and survivor support.
These larger societal tensions compound the personal stressors we each navigate daily. For survivors of sexual violence, this heightened collective anxiety can be particularly triggering, especially when public discourse around sexual assault becomes contentious or dismissive.
This burden disproportionately impacts those already facing structural inequalities—the very inequalities our practice is committed to challenging: racism, sexism, classism, anti-trans discrimination, oppression, stigma, and ableism.
